HIP & BACK PAIN

Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome

An overuse injury causing pain on the outside of the knee, especially in runners and cyclists, due to irritation of the ITB as it passes the knee. General treatment includes activity modification, reducing training load, stretching and strengthening (particularly hips and glutes), addressing biomechanics, and gradual return to activity once symptoms settle.

Leg Length Discrepancy

when one leg is shorter than the other, which may contribute to altered posture, gait changes, and pain in the feet, knees, hips, or lower back. General treatment depends on the size and cause of the difference, and may include footwear modifications, heel lifts or orthotics, physiotherapy, and monitoring. Significant discrepancies may require specialist referral.

Trochanteric Bursitis

(Often referred to as greater trochanteric pain syndrome) causes pain on the outer side of the hip, commonly worsened by walking, climbing stairs, or lying on the affected side. General treatment includes activity modification, targeted strengthening and stretching, physiotherapy, pain relief measures, and addressing biomechanical factors. Most cases improve with conservative management, with injections or specialist referral considered if symptoms persist.
